Our verdict

It depends on your priorities

Two United Kingdom products with Making Tax Digital built in, at £33 a month and nothing.

TechBigs verdict, published Sep 4, 2026

Pandle covers a surprising amount for free, including bank feeds and Making Tax Digital submissions. FreeAgent is worth its price when you need payroll, self-assessment filing, or simply have a NatWest, Royal Bank of Scotland, Ulster Bank or Mettle account that makes it free.

What each one costs

FreeAgent prices by legal structure: £10 a month for unincorporated landlords, £19 for sole traders, £27 for partnerships and limited liability partnerships, £33 for limited companies. It is free for customers of NatWest, Royal Bank of Scotland, Ulster Bank and Mettle. Pandle's main plan is free, with Pandle Pro at £5 a month plus VAT after a fourteen-day trial.

Filing and payroll

FreeAgent states Making Tax Digital VAT returns filed to HM Revenue and Customs, a real-time view of the self-assessment position with direct filing, and monthly payroll with PAYE and National Insurance. Pandle states VAT returns and Making Tax Digital income tax submissions, but no payroll. For a limited company paying directors through PAYE, that is the deciding line.

What the free plan holds

Pandle's free plan lists bank feeds, receipt uploads, invoicing and quotes, multiple currencies, stock control, unlimited users, cash flow forecasting and bank rules. That is more than most paid entry plans in this catalogue, which makes Pandle the sensible first stop for a United Kingdom micro-business before paying anyone.
